Traditional termite barriers will involve treating all the soil areas around the entire building structure to provide a continuous zone that will kill or repel termites that enter the treated zones. Most termite management chemicals have a limited life span of three, five or eight years before the system needs to be replenished or topped up

HOW LONG DOES A CHEMICAL TERMITE BARRIER LAST?

An effective liquid soil termite barrier treatment will last up to 8 years when applied as per label rates. The duration of any given treatment depends on several factors, such as which termiticide product was used, thoroughness of applications, the local area, environmental conditions, and conducive conditions to termite attack, undertaken major renovation without prior treatments, previous infestations and density of termites on the site. If termites infest the structure within a year of the initial treatment date, it’s usually found to be in an area that the treatment has been limited or an untreated gap in the chemical barrier, not from degradation of the termiticide.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A TERMITE BARRIER ?

The purpose of installing a termite barrier or soil treatment is to provide a long-lasting “barrier” in the soil around the structure to prevent termites from entering and causing major damage to your building. In nearly most cases, termites that have already made it into the building will die off as well, since they become inhibited by the treated zones to return to the soil for supplemental moisture. Most liquid termiticides in the early 1990s were repellent chemicals meaning the termites would only repel from the treated zones. Current products such as Termidor and Fipronil are non-repellents and allow termites to forage freely into the treated zone where they become infected and carry it back to the colony and infect others. This is also known as “The Transfer Effect”. Products such as Termidor are usually more effective in controlling infestation in the first attempt
