Lice are parasite insects with no wings that feed on blood, and there are about 3,000 species worldwide. The most common ones are
HEAD LICE
,
BODY LICE
and
CRAB LICE
. They are really small (1/16 to 1/8 inch long), they have a long and flat body with 6 legs and antennae, and a dirty white to grey colour. They also have a hook-like claw at the end of their legs and sucking mouthparts used for getting the blood.
Head Lice
These insects are usually found in hair above the ears or on the back of the scalp. They are transmitted from human to human through direct contact or through the use of the same brushes, combs, towels or hats. They are quite common in crowded places in third-world countries, including in elementary schools. Female head lice can lay up to 100 eggs and they are glued to a piece of hair near the scalp. If they have the needed warmth and humidity, they will hatch in 5 to 10 days. The nymphs then need to feed with blood from the scalp within 24 hours, otherwise they die. In about 3 weeks they become adults, and can live for another 3 (with the right conditions and a source of blood). Without a host, head lice cannot survive for more than 48 hours.
Body Lice
This species lives on clothes, especially items made of wool. Females can be found along the seams (where they also lay the eggs), while males are usually found inside of the clothing. They are transmitted through the sharing of clothes or bedding. When the infested human is sleeping, body lice move from the clothing to their body. Females can lay up to 200 eggs, and they are glued to a clothing fibre. But they tend to be laid in places where the clothes come in contact with the body, such as the neck, shoulders, waist or armpits. It takes about 2 to 4 weeks for newborns to become adults, and then they can live for up to 29 days.
Crab Lice
They are usually found in areas of the body with plenty of hair (beard, eyebrows, armpits or the pubic region). They can only spread through direct physical contact and cannot survive for more than 24 hours without a host. A female lays up to 50 eggs and in this case each egg is individually glued to a hair near the skin. They hatch in 7-8 days and start feeding in 1 to 2 hours. They reach adulthood in 5 to 6 weeks and then live for up to 25 days.
ARE LICE DANGEROUS?
Their bites can cause excessive itching and redness, and the frequent scratching can then cause skin infections. Not only this, but the body lice can also transmit diseases such as typhus, relapsing fever or trench fever. And let’s face it: no one wants to have insects on their body that suck their blood, so it’s important to take action as soon as possible.
SIGNS OF LICE
The main sign of head lice is an itchy scalp and frequent scratching. The eggs and lice are more numerous than other species, and also more difficult to remove. Some people may confuse lice eggs with dandruff, but they are quite different. The eggs are very small and attached to the base of the hair, while dandruff is flaky skin spread all over the hair. Dandruff is not contagious, while lice are. Body lice are rare today compared to many years ago when they were frequent in areas of war and disaster. The only sign they give is when they are spotted on the surface of the clothing. Least but not last, crab lice can be discovered by noticing their eggs and feeling discomfort, scratching and irritation in various hairy parts of the body. Also, small blue dots appear at the feeding locations, and they usually include swelling and tenderness too.
